Synopsis For Music Video

The synopsis for my music video will be similar to the original song where Alan Walker's original song. basically in the video, mostly it is just Alan walking around in abandoned places. at the start, he puts his laptop in his bag and starts walking around in abandoned places. at the end he does a comparison of a old house in a picture and takes the picture down and the house is destroyed. i will be using text animation for my music video!

Nature & Purposes Research

Primary Research (Documentary Research)

Primary research is where you do your own research by following out questionnaires and surveys which are created by you. websites such as google surveys and survey monkey are two online digital ways to collect research. what i did to college primary research is i created a survey for my video game addiction documentary. the survey asked for multiple questions like how much time you spend on video games and how much money you spend a month on video games.

Secondary Research (Also Artist Research)

Secondary research is where you find information from external sources such a Wikipedia and google which are the two most used secondary research sites. i used Wikipedia to research about Alan Walker for my music video to get an understanding about him as a person.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is were you use numerical figures to show a statistic, the biggest example of this using polls, this can be done via twitter or google forums. i used a poll which shows statistical figures in my video game addiction survey.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is data collected through interviews and reviews. its a bit like primary research but you are looking at external sources like interviews and reviews. TV shows and even Youtubers do reviews, IGN is known for this video game reviews. i have used Qualitative research when i analysed a LYNX TV advert for my advert research.

Audience And Market Research

Audience and Market research is where you research the target audience for a certain product. i have done audience feedback for my re-branding PG tips. i got 3 responses on what the audience likes and dislikes about the advert video we created.

Production Research

Production research is where you research production of what you making. examples can be location recce, production schedule and Risk Assessments. here is some past production research i have done in the past for my assignments.

Unilever Prezi Research

This Prezi explains about what is Unilever and it also shows statistical numbers on how big the company, showing what kind of products it sells / brands.

Styles, Conventions And Techniques Of Music Videos

Narrative

A narrative technique is where the music video has a story to it which mixes in with the music video. this can be from dancing or just a video story which is visually explained. some songs are are hard to tell what is it means via audio. a narrative music video will explain the music video in context with the song making it easier for the audience. The Song "Alan Walker Faded" can be classed as a narrative as at the end of the music video, it shows a picture of his house and then the after math of the house being decayed and abandoned (that's why the song is called "Faded"). the shots are partially in sync with the beat of the song.

Parody

A Parody is where it is a remake of an original music video. it avoids copyright and will fall under fair use when you produce a parody. most parodies are mean for comedic purpose. a example of a parody is a fan made parody of "Love yourself" which originated by Austin Bieber and was parodied by Bart Baker. using the change of lyrics and the video makes it a complete parody. also keeping the tone of the song, if the tone of song changes, it will be mostly seen as a different song.

Animation

Animation is the use of multiple pictures combines together to create movement. all frames of the video are hand drawn or produced though Photoshop. animation usually take a ton of time to make and requires multiple people involved to get an animation done in a reasonable time. animation also can be 3D animation which in this day and age, we have technology that makes 3D animation a whole lot quicker to produce but still takes time to produce. the minecraft song known as "Diggy Diggy Hole" is a great example of a animation music video. it uses 2D animation which is created with multiple frames to create a moving picture.

Lip Synch

A lip Synch is where the music video is recorded separated from the actual song, when recording the song so you have to record the song with the lip synch. it can be frustrating as it would take numerous amounts of times to get right. a example of lip sync is Jake Paul's song "It's Everyday bro" where he recorded the audio separately from the video. he did make a video on youtube where he recorded the song at a different time of when he did the music video!

Editing

Editing is important when you make a music video, without it it wouldnt make a music video. but there are times where editing is really needed to make the music video work. like the music video "Take on me" where it mixes the use of picture animation in with real life video shooting. this also mixes in with animation! they did the hand animation buy adding a video overlay which also might be done with chroma. without editing this wouldnt be possible.

Post Production Effects

Post production effects are special effects where they use effects in editing because it isnt possible or too dangerous in real life. a example of this is "Eminem - Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna" where they use fire as a background and where the furniture on fire. if you tried this in real life, it would go out of control and most likely would set the who set on fire. so they used effects for safety purposes and it would cost more!

Split Screen

Split screen is where it uses two videos which are on the screen at the same time. a example of this is "Blink 182 Always" where it uses 3 different videos, same camera position to create this split screen.

Chroma Key

Chroma key is a editing technique where it removes a colour from a video and replaces it with a background video. this is used a lot in movies and is used in music videos. Chroma key is an editing term but people knows it from "Green Screening". a music video that uses this is "Kayne West Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" where kayne is laying on the bed which is controlled my machinery. this is done by laying on the bed where the rest of the shot is green.

Purpose Of Music Videos

Introduction

The purpose of this essay is to prove my understanding of music videos and give examples how techniques are used in music video. this will be shown by video examples with YouTube links and will be explained how the techniques are used in the video. Also i will be explaining why music videos exist in the industry that we live in today!

Promotion Of Artists

The promotion of artists is done by using their logos or names in the music video. this can be for a solo artist or even for a band. this is a way for the artist/band to promote their name for easier recolonization. sometime you see a music video. this also can be the use of the artist in the video, an example of this is in Justin Bieber's video "What do you mean?".

who was directed by Bran Furman which right at the start of the music video, said "A Film by Brad Furman" which promotes the director and as it is a song by Justin Bieber, he will get a lot of recolonization! Using him as the main actor will show the audience who he is and will provide him with more promotion. it will be a huge promotion due to the mass of Justin Biebers popularity!
Producer Strategies (Artist Marketing)

The way the artist promotes him/herself will depend who will be interested in their product. so if a female artist promote herself half naked all the time, most likely her fans are sexually attracted to her compared to a fully clothed girl who will most likely will be appreciate for who she is and not her body. some artists do this for more attention so more people will watch their videos so they have a higher ad revenue!

music video directed by Will Cotten. Katty Pretty advertises with non PG clothing which is aimed at older men. most men are attracted to sexual looks and humor so her audience will be men how see her in a sexual way!

Record Label Income

the way music videos make money can be done in multiple ways. one way is through YouTube, before the actual video starts, it will play a Ad, the money will go to the video uploaded aka the artist. also the use of iTunes is used to sell their songs which will give them payment. at the start of this video, most likely will play an ad. this is a way the artists and producers make money.

The Extension Of Media Outlets

The use of of technology, there multiple ways to play a music video. the two multiple ones which are popular are TV channels and YouTube. TV channels such as Clubland TV and MTV both present music videos on their TV channels which are dedicated to play music videos. YouTube in this day and age, is more popular than music video TV channels because most people today prefer YouTube as you can choose what song you want and its all free. some TV services will charge extra for music channels. a screenshot example shows a music video on YouTube. also the reason why YouTube is more popular than music channels on TV is because  you can comment on YouTube video and you can share videos via link of through social media websites.

Marketing

The use of merchandise from the song will give them a ton more recolonization and money! a example of this is Frozen's song "Let It Go", they promote merchandise in every direction of products such as toys, food cans, posters and even low-end furniture. they do this to market their music video even more by promoting via merchandise.

What i think of music videos?

personally, i think music videos are not a big deal. it can give you a better impression on what the song is about. but at the same time some music videos are really terrible and doesnt give any picture on what the song is about. either way, i find buying the song better than listening to it on TV or YouTube as its offline because i have no wifi at home. but i dont mind music videos!

Music Video Analysis + Research

Lyrics
You were the shadow to my light
Did you feel us
Another start
You fade away
Afraid our aim is out of sight
Wanna see us
Alive
Where are you now
Where are you now
Where are you now
Was it all in my fantasy
Where are you now
Were you only imaginary
Where are you now
Atlantis
Under the sea
Under the sea
Where are you now
Another dream
The monsters running wild inside of me
I'm faded
I'm faded
So lost
I'm faded
I'm faded
So lost
I'm faded
These shallow waters, never met
What I needed
I'm letting go
A deeper dive
Eternal silence of the sea
I'm breathing
Alive
Where are you now
Where are you now
Under the bright
But faded lights
You set my heart on fire
Where are you now
Where are you now
Where are you now
Atlantis
Under the sea
Under the sea
Where are you now
Another dream
The monsters running wild inside of me
I'm faded
I'm faded
So lost
I'm faded
I'm faded
So lost
I'm faded
the lyrics in this song is to represent that your life is falling apart. this is proved by using words such as "lost", "Faded" and the quote "Where are you now". this also shows loneliness by this quote. it is very repetitive sounding like the artist is lost for words.

Video
The video for this song is basically alan walker walking around in abandoned places alone. at the end it ends with a building which is destroyed with a over shoulder shot with him looking at a old picture of the house and this is why the song is called faded as the house is faded away which might of been his relatives or families house which is destroyed.
also the house is in the middle of nowhere and on the left side of the building it has graffiti showing that is abandoned. most abandoned places are decayed and this is why the song is called "Faded". the music isnt in sync with the video.

Instrumental
the instrumental is a mix of slow pace and fast paced, it all along very depressing because it is to represent that when things are missing in your life, you will be depressed.

The Artist (Alan Walker)

Alan Walker.jpg
Alan Walker, Born on 24th of august 1997. starting his carrer in 2012, he mostly dedicates his music in the electro-house genre. he got reconsidered when he made the song "Fade" which is posted on a royalty free music channel known as NCS(No Copyright Sounds). following up with songs like "specture" which weren't as popular as "Fade". his song which i am analyzing which is "Faded" made it into the top charts and that is when the properly blew up.
his appearance is him wearing full black with a face mask on. he wear this style because he has a hacker figure like under the radar feeling.

Types Of Brief

Contractual
it is a legal document between the employee and the client. it is written straight forward so its easy to understand.

Advantages

  • Makes it clear to understand and can prevent confusion
  • it can be seen as a contract to prevent false allegations
  • it will lay down what needs to done one be set in stone
Disadvantages
  • sometimes the employee will write out something different by accident
  • if it is set as a contract, it will be done the employees standards not the clients standards

Negotiated

it is where the employee and the client come to an agreement when it comes to the corporate video.

Advantages:
  • it makes it easier for the employee to create the video (more flexible)
  • it can open up more ideas
Disadvantages:
  • it possibly can cause arguments if it gets out of hand
  • the client might just cancel the offer if it negotiated too much

Formal
a formal brief is where a document is written in detail and straight forward but isn't mostly used for legal terms.

Advantages:
  • Its is straight forward and easy to understand
  • it looks more professional
Disadvantages:
  • some clients might not like the how the contract is written

Informal
a informal brief is not documented . it mostly takes about what the client wants/requires for the production of the corporate video.

Advantages:
  • there is more verbal communication involved than a formal brief
Disadvantages:
  • there is no written documentation to prove employment

Commission
a commission brief is where a large media company teams up with another media company to produce a product for the client.

Advantages:
  • the larger companies don't have to do much work due to the large amounts of people.
Disadvantages:
  • if two companies are working together, there might be a dispute between both of the companies

Tender
A tender brief is where the client will advertise the brief to multiple companies. the companies will do a proposal to the client.

Advantages:
  • it will give more variety for the client when it comes to the proposal
Disadvantages:
  • the client can only choose one proposal. there is a high chance that the companies proposal will be denied.
Cooperative
a cooperative brief intends of two or more companies who hired by the client to work together to produce the video.

Advantages:
  • Having more companies will open the field up in terms of ideas
Disadvantages:
  • having multiple companies working together can cause feuds due to disagreements.
Competition
a Competition Brief is where the client will give out the brief for all companies. the companies will make the videos and at the end, the client will choose the best one.

Advantages:
  • It will give a ton of variation for the client
Disadvantages:
  • Same disadvantage of the tender brief, it is a very high chance that they will be turned down

Current Practices in Corporate Video Production

Introduction
i will be explaining everything law related stuff to making a corporate video. such as fair use, copyright etc. also i will be providing examples with embedded videos!

Copyright
copyright is where a piece of music and videos is protected from others from making money or even using the content. people breaking copyright could be sued and charged up to $150,000. this can be pirating movies/music etc. or even using copyrighted content on your own videos. like if uploaded the whole Lord Of The Rings Trilogy to YouTube mortised or not, i will get sued as it is copyrighted content that i didn't have permission to upload.  if i had permission from the owner of the content, that is okay and would be legal.

the corporate video from ikea, it has background music which is copyrighted or the have owner ship from. for them to use music they would need permission, without the permission they would face heavy fines so it is important for ikea to get permission of the artist who created this song.

Privacy
privacy is where the information presented in the video isn't leaking any confidential information such as passwords, personal information. So basically anything private. if you publish anything confidential, it will break the law of privacy. if a journalist wants to publish information about the person that they are interviewing, they would need permission to avoid the breach of privacy. even that, sometimes there has to be a limit because some interviews as some information can be too personal. this can be personal in like there addresses, card info or event how they look.

Defamation
Defamation is basically where a company/person damages a reputation of another company/person.  this is called defaming which is slander if you say is wrong is false. a great example of this is on supermarket adverts where they do price comparisons. it is bringing down the other companies reputation by stealing their customers which can cause a competitiveness that can lead into rivalry which can lead to hate which can cause slander!

Ethical
ethical is where the producers has to think what needs to go into the video that they are making. this can include, what sort of lighting such as natural/artificial, should it be indoors or outdoors, what gender/race/age actors should be presented, what kind of music should be used and if it is copyrighted or not, how much its going to cost and how long it takes to produce the corporate video. an example of this is if a indoor skiing club wants a corporate video done, it would have artificial lighting, it would be indoors, the actors would be a mix who has an interest in skiing.

Fair Use
fair use is where someone wants to use copyrighted content in a education or a useful way without being sue/prosecuted/charged/striked by the holder. if the copyrighted content is used under fair use, it should be seen as educational or useful, and mostly should have snippets and should be used under 30 seconds. if these are all met, the content would be protected by fair use and the copyright holder wouldn't be able to take that video down.

Releases
Releases is where you have log of the location you recorded at, the people who performed/acted in the video and what was used such as camera equipment, costumes, props (weapons, anything used in the making which is shown on camera). this is important because it proves you have permission to shoot in that certain spot to keep the video on the legal side to prevent prosecution and this can lead onto dodging a huge charge which be be up to $250,000! every corporate video needs to do this even if it is their own location, their own costumes and their own props.

the corporate video catvertising is using multiple locations which would require a release form. this is because some places dont allow recording and this can lead up to massive fines. so the use of multiple locations
Technologies
Camera: GoPro Hero 5
The GoPro Hero 5 is a small ultra high quality camera which can shoot in ultra high quality and can do the following:

  • 8K - 30 FPS
  • 4K - 60 FPS
  • 1080p - 120FPS
Costing around £325 it is a very expensive piece of equipment but is very durable meaning it can withstand gravitational impacts that a normal camera wouldn't be able to. it is also 100% water proof. the use of this camera in corporate videos is mostly used in sport as it would be great to grab first person perspective to show action and fast paced movement. Adverts like Redbull, Lucozade or even any sport merchandises would mostly come to use with a GoPro with corporate video.

Editing Software: Adobe Premier Pro
Adobe Premier Pro is used by everyone, professional video editors, youtubers, schools and even general use. this is great for corporate videos as the software has so much variety in it. to colour correction, clean transitions, image overlays and so much more. it would make corporate video production a lot easier. it has to come with a subscription price of £50 a month but it does do the job.

 Camera Equipment: Tripod

A tripod is really essential. it is used to prevent camera shaking by mounting the camera on top of the tripod instead of the person physically holding it. this is used in corporate videos a lot, because it prevents camera shaking, it makes it look more professional as the camera is at a still. these are reasonably cheap as well so it wouldn't tap too much into the budget. also you can rotate the camera horizontally and vertically, it will also keep in place securely. i would say this is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in corporate video production.
